Bear Hugs and Bear Attacks

The other week I wrote about how recent events gave me a deep seeded need for some improv (Laughter Is The Best Medicine). I was lucky enough to play with Adam Kangas, Justin Porter and Marcus Willis in Bear Attack as the Mystery Team for The Improv Conspiracy‘s Harold Night.

We took a lyrics “Straight Outta Compton” which is very much in the zeitgeist right now, and created a show full of Steamboats, a pair of Southern Sisters called the Juniper Girls, intelligent birds, Bone knowledge, steam room massage, shoe thugs and setting people on fire. Was it ‘good improv’, I just can’t say, but was it fun (no quotation marks), hell yeah. Did I feel better when I woke up the next day, hell yeah. Did I enter the next day feeling lucky for the experience. Hell yeah. Sometimes we just have to have fun.

Afterwards Marcus and I did a Cage Match, which was great fun. We had a lot of weird characters and relationships, which is kind of our shtick I think. Great to play with Marcus again, as it’s been a long time, and I didn’t realise how long until we stepped on-stage. It was great to feel like life is a fun place again, after everything that’s been going on.

Damien Vosk was up against us in Cage Match, and rocked it. He pulled someone out of the crowd and did a 20 minute long-form set in a trampoline arena, it was super fun, supportive and funny!

The whole match was MC’d by Broni Lisle, who was in fine form on the night. He never fails to get people worked up when he hosts.

I feel lucky. Thanks to everyone who was on-stage with me, and those who were off-stage, I hope you were having as much fun as I was – although maybe that’s not possible. 🙂

  1. You’re a good man. Thanks for enjoying me basically laughing in front of people. Glad you got your medicine. You concoct that very medicine for many others.
